China recorded a port cargo throughput of 546 million tonnes in May, up five percent from a year earlier, adding to signs that Chinese ports are reviving, according to the latest data compiled by the Ministry of Transport.

Of that total amount, foreign trade cargo throughput accounted for 182 million tonnes, an increase of 4.7 percent on a year-on-year basis, with domestic trade throughput settling at 364 million tonnes, up 5.1 percent from the same month in 2008, said SinoCast, quoting ministry figures.

During the period, the container throughput topped 9.75 million TEUs, down 9.7 percent year-on-year, narrowing the pace of the decline by four percentage points.
