May sees domestic and foreign trade double growth in cargo throughput

According to the Journal of the Waterborne Transport Bureau of the MOT, China's port cargo throughput has achieved positive growth for the last three consecutive months. Of note, foreign trade cargo throughput has recorded a second positive growth.

In May, port cargo throughput stood at about 546 million tons, up by 5%. Of which, 182 million tons were foreign trade goods, up by 4.7%; domestic trade cargo was 364 million tons, up by 5.1%. Ring growth for the first categories has reached as high as 3.3% and 4.6% respectively.

Also in May, port container throughput finished at approx. 9.75 million TEUs, down by 9.7%, a value 4% less than the declining rate of April. The volume of imported iron ore unloaded by ports is 55.5 million tons, up by 24.6%. Coal volume was at 40.5 million tons, down by 15.5%; domestic and foreign trade coal unloaded was 49.2 million tons, up by 10.8%. The volume of imported crude oil was 13.8 million tons, up of 5.1%.
